Remember September 2010: Eerde commemoration Eerde, a small village just West of Veghel, saw intense fighting during World War 2. Paratroopers of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment were heavily engaged with German soldiers. For many days the fighting continued. Eventually, the village was secured and the people were free. Back in 1944, the people of Eerde saw these men from the sky, landing on their fields to save them from German oppression. They also saw, the price that was payed for freedom. Freedom that was earned with blood of brave young men, that came from far away to ensure liberty for all. Since then, the people of Eerde pay their respect to the men and women, soldier or civilian, that lost their life during the actions in and around Eerde. The ceremony is held at the monument near the windmill. Below you find a picture report of this year’s commemoration. Please also visit the website of the Airborne committee Eerde, they put a lot of effort in keeping the memory of our liberators alive!
