Reuniting a soldier with his helmet:

August 12 2011. A while ago, my friend Dennis, was able to buy the helmet of Ivie A. Ward jr. Ivie was a member of company B of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. When the 502nd jumped into the Netherlands for operation Market Garden, Ivie’s company had to secure the village of Sint-Oedenrode. After some intense fighting, the battle shifted towards Olland and Schijndel. While fighting on the Ollandseweg, on September 19 1944, Ivie was hit by German rifle fire and died of his wounds. My friend Dennis is an avid collector of WWII US and German airborne items. He grew up on the Ollandseweg in Sint-Oedenrode. So when he had the chance to buy the helmet, he did.

Today Dennis, Frenk and I visited Margraten war cemetery where Ivie A. Ward jr. is buried. Dennis wanted to reunite the helmet with its owner. Below you find a picture report of this event.

If you like to visit Ivie A. Ward’s grave, you can find his grave in Plot: A, Row: 4, Grave: 13, on Margraten war cemetery, the Netherlands.
